History

In 2008 Crowborough was awarded Fairtrade Town status by the Fairtrade Foundation.  This was a remarkable achievement in a relatively short space of time – just three years since the formation of CrAFT (Crowborough Action on FairTrade),  a small voluntary group which worked with the support of the Town Council to submit Crowborough’s successful application.

To receive Fairtrade status we had to show that the Town Council was committed to Fairtrade on a practical level – using coffee, tea, sugar and other fairly-traded goods whenever possible.  The Town Council also passed resolutions showing commitment to the Fairtrade movement.

In addition, CrAFT submitted a list of organisations and businesses who either use or sell Fairtrade products.  We needed a certain number in order to qualify as a Fairtrade Town, a target we are pleased to say that we exceeded!
